Martini is an american invention. It is a gin based cocktail with dry white vermouth (wine with aromatic herbs) and ice. It is stirred into a chilled glass, garnished with olives or lemon peel and served straight up i.e it is mixed but not served with ice.
Proportions in Martini are
* 5 parts of gin with 1 part of dry vermouth and ice (Common)
* 6 parts of gin with 1 part of dry vermouth and ice (Popular in Europe)
Variations in martini are -
Vodka Martini - It is made with vodka instead of gin.
Dirty Martini - Olive juice is added to a martini to make it a dirty martini.
Mexican martini - It consists of a margarita on the rocks strained into a salted cocktail glass with olives.
Smoky martini - Gin with a splash of Scotch whisky, stirred and garnished with lemon peel.
